Candy Land, Cards and Uno with Seniors
St. Louis Chapter - Unplugged, elementary students visit seniors for a afternoon that encouraged mental stimulataion in seniors.
Elementary school children from the St. Louis chapter gathered at the Autumn View Gardens nursing home and spent their afternoon unplugged, playing board games such as Candy Land, classic card games including Uno and working on puzzles.
It was more than just an afternoon of games; it was an opportunity to build genuine intergenerational connections. As they played together, children taught new cards tricks to seniors, practiced patience while discovering how much wisdom, humor, and warmth the seniors had to offer. Playing games face-to-face, without screens gave young minds an opportunity to slow down, be present in the moment and experience the joy of giving time to others.
The residents at the nursing home deeply appreciated the chance to engage with children and fostered companionship and mental stimulation. Simple interactions like choosing game pieces, or working together on a puzzle is incredibly beneficial to seniors.
It is in these simple moments of authentic human connection that compassion and mutual respect and joy are nurtured and bridges between ages are created. In the end, the afternoon left both generations smiling.
